REFLECTIVE VERBS AND THEIR SYNTACTIC STRUCTURE IN GERMAN

Abstract
This thesis analyzes reflexive verbs in German and their syntactic structure based on the requirements of modern grammar. The phenomenon of reflexivity is inextricably linked to the valency of the verb, the structure of the argument, and the arrangement of parts of speech, and is expressed in German through reflexive pronouns (mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich; also mir, dir, sich, etc.). The study examines the obligatory and optional forms of reflexive verbs, the status of the reflexive pronoun as a complement, the semantic and syntactic possibilities of the predicate, as well as the word order and functional loading of reflexive constructions. The results show that reflexive verbs in German form not only “action directed towards oneself”, but also complex meanings such as middle, spontaneous occurrence, internal state of the subject, and discourse centralization.
