BIOECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LEPIDOPTERA FAUNA OF THE USTYURT PLATEAU (KARAKALPAKSTAN) AND PROSPECTS FOR ITS CONSERVATION

Abstract
This paper analyses the bioecological characteristics of the butterfly (Lepidoptera) fauna under the conditions of the Ustyurt Plateau of Karakalpakstan, their indicator significance in desert ecosystems and the directions of their conservation. The aim of the work is to substantiate the relevance of studying the diversity of butterflies in the Ustyurt area and to propose a methodological approach to monitoring. Route observation, visual counting, entomological traps, photographic recording, GPS marking and the analysis of published sources were taken as the research methods. According to recent data, during field observations in March–April 2025 approximately 17 Lepidoptera species were recorded on the Ustyurt Plateau, one of which is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan as a rare species [1]. The results show that the butterfly fauna of Ustyurt is adapted to arid landscapes but is sensitive to the effects of pasture pressure, road infrastructure, light pollution and climatic aridisation. In conclusion, the need for long-term phenological monitoring in the area, the mapping of host plants and the special protection of rare species is substantiated.
