THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY ON COCOON QUALITY DURING THE SILKWORM REARING PERIOD
Main Article Content
Abstract
The paper examines the effect of temperature and air humidity on cocoon quality during the rearing of the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori). It is shown that the normal growth and development of the larvae, the weight of the cocoon, the weight of the shell and the silk yield depend directly on the microclimate of the rearing house. Temperature and relative humidity in the rearing house were monitored with a psychrometer, and growth rate, viability, duration of the larval period, cocoon weight and quality indicators were recorded. According to the study, a temperature of 26-28 °C and a relative humidity of 80-85 % are recommended for the younger instars, and 23-25 °C with 65-75 % humidity for the older ones. Deviation from these values disturbs physiological processes and reduces cocoon weight and silk yield, whereas optimal hygrothermal conditions yield heavier cocoons with a thicker shell and a higher silk output.
