Abstract
The article presents the results of monitoring medicinal plants in the Republic of Karakalpakstan. Medicinal plants are characterised as species used for treating humans and animals and preventing diseases, as well as in the food, perfumery and cosmetics industries. It is noted that 10,000-12,000 species of medicinal plants are known worldwide and that the chemical and pharmacological properties of more than 1,000 species have been examined, while 40-47% of the medicines used today are obtained from plant raw material. More than 700 species of medicinal plants grow in Uzbekistan, about 120 of which are applied in scientific and folk medicine. In Karakalpakstan 360 medicinal species occur, making up more than 37% of the whole flora. The biological features and distribution of individual species are analysed, among them Salsola richteri Karel., Hyoscyamus niger L., Equisetum ramosissimum and Tamarix ramosissima.
