CURRENT ISSUES IN STUDYING THE DIVERSITY OF MEDICINAL PLANT SPECIES

Abstract
The article analyses the species diversity of medicinal plants and the current problems of studying it. According to certain data, the flora of Karakalpakstan today comprises 1,110 plant species, of which 37%, that is more than 410, possess medicinal properties. Of the 73 species growing on the dried bed of the Aral Sea, 13 are medicinal; 85 medicinal species have been recorded on the Ustyurt Plateau and 66 in the desert areas. Nearly 45 of these species belong to the category of declining, rare and endangered medicinal plants. The paper also reviews earlier research on the medicinal flora of the region and the data on its chemical composition, in particular alkaloid-bearing species, and considers the influence of anthropogenic factors together with the growing role of introduction and cultivation in meeting the demand for medicinal plant raw material.
