THE PHYTOMELIORATIVE AND ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF ZYGOPHYLLUM IN RESTORING DEGRADED LANDS OF THE ARAL SEA REGION
Main Article Content
Abstract
The paper examines the role of Zygophyllum in restoring degraded lands and combating desertification under the extreme ecological conditions of the Aral Sea region. The biological features of the plant are described: a strong taproot system penetrating to a depth of 5-10 m, a much-branched semi-shrub habit 30-80 cm high, fleshy succulent leaves, and small pale-yellow or reddish flowers that open mainly in April and May. Its halophytic nature, resistance to drought and ability to fix sandy and saline soils (phytomelioration), as well as its capacity to absorb excess salts and heavy metals, are discussed. The economic importance of the species is also considered, in particular as fodder for camels, as a nectar source, and as raw material containing alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and vitamin C. The results provide a basis for practical recommendations on creating green cover and conserving biodiversity in the region.
