Abstract

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is a climate-resilient, multi-purpose grain crop, and the correct determination of the phenological stages of its growth period is of great importance in planning agrotechnical measures. The paper considers the cultivation of salt-tolerant white sorghum under soil salinisation, a global ecological problem. Salinisation disturbs the physical and chemical balance of the soil, limits the uptake of water and nutrients, leads to excess accumulation of sodium and chloride ions, raises osmotic pressure and lowers photosynthesis and root and leaf development. Although white sorghum is comparatively salt-tolerant, different levels of salinity cause noticeable differences in growth rate, biomass formation, root development, leaf area and photosynthetic activity. Sorghum is also a good phytomeliorant, removing salt ions from the soil with its green mass.
