A STUDY OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF IRRIGATED SOILS

Abstract
The article examines the mechanical properties of irrigated soils. On the basis of field and laboratory experiments the mechanical indicators of the soils were determined and ways of improving them were proposed. Samples were taken from specified depths in the field, and the mechanical composition was determined in the laboratory using a sodium hexametaphosphate dispersant. In the first profile the plough layer at 0-52 cm consisted of heavy and medium loam, the 52-103 cm layer of light loam and the 103-140 cm layer of heavy loam; in the second, the 0-48 cm layer consisted of heavy and medium loam, the 48-110 cm layer of light loam and sandy loam, and the 110-150 cm layer of cohesive sand. It was established that soils differing in mechanical composition possess distinct physical and mechanical characteristics. The results serve as a scientific basis for rational use of irrigated land.
