THE TRANSLATION OF “LISON UT-TAYR”: THE PROBLEM OF THE ADEQUACY OF METAPHORICAL UNITS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyses the problem of the adequacy of metaphorical units that arises when Alisher Navoi's poem Lison ut-tayr is translated into English. It is shown that, owing to the semantic differences between Eastern and Western languages, it is difficult to convey the religious and spiritual content in full. The study compares the important metaphors of the original with their English equivalents and considers the question of preserving the spiritual essence of the text in the translation process. The results show that in literary translation it is important to take into account the cultural and religious context along with linguistic knowledge.
