Abstract
Translation studies, as an interdisciplinary field of knowledge, is closely connected with philology, linguistics and cultural studies. This article examines the main general philological problems of translation, such as equivalence, linguistic and cultural differences, stylistic adaptation and the choice of translation strategies. Particular attention is paid to the role of the translator in preserving the meaning and the stylistics of the original text. The influence of the target language on the resulting text is analysed and the ethical aspects of translation activity are considered.
