THE ROLE OF DIALOGUE IN REVEALING THE CHARACTERS AND CONSTRUCTING THE PLOT IN THE NOVEL “THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD”

Abstract

The article studies how Zora Neale Hurston uses dialogue to reveal the inner world of the characters and to develop the plot in the novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God". Particular attention is paid to how the dialogic structure contributes to the formation of Janie Crawford's individuality and reflects her personal growth. Janie's interactions with other characters are examined, as well as the significance of the use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in the novel. The dialogues act as a means of struggle for voice, self-expression and equality, which makes the novel a key work of African American literature.
