Abstract

Incomplete sentences (or elliptical constructions) are syntactic units in which the elements usually present in standard sentences are omitted, yet the meaning remains clear and comprehensible thanks to the context. This article carries out a functional syntactic study of incomplete sentences in dialogic speech on the material of the English and Uzbek languages. The features of the use of incomplete sentences in these languages, their role in communication, as well as syntactic structures and their functions in dialogues are assessed. The article also examines the differences and similarities in the use of incomplete sentences in these languages.
