Histochemical characteristics of secretory cells of the lung
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify new morphofunctional characteristics of secretory cells in rabbit lung tissue during postnatal ontogenesis. Lung tissue samples obtained from rabbits aged from 1 day to 180 days were used as the research material. The following histological methods were employed: staining with hematoxylin and eosin, staining by the Van Gieson method, and impregnation using the Foot method. Fresh frozen sections were subjected to histochemical examination to study alkaline phosphatase activity using the Gomori method.
The results showed that, unlike the cells of the pulmonary acini, secretory cells were characterized by the highest activity of alkaline phosphatase. Although moderate enzyme activity was detected in these cells during most observation periods, an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity was recorded on the 7th, 15th, and 30th days after birth. During these periods, the increased activity of alkaline phosphatase in secretory cells was associated with a complex correlation involving the stromal component of the pulmonary acini, its argyrophilic properties, and especially the development of its elastic framework.
