Abstract

This study examines women’s contribution to the development of applied arts on the basis of Uzbekistan’s experience in artistic crafts. Museum catalogs, materials of international cultural organizations and descriptions of scholarly and educational projects are analyzed comparatively. The interrelation between women’s activities as artisans, mentors, designers and researchers is highlighted. Based on the analysis, it is argued that the preservation of tradition, the transfer of knowledge, the renewal of products and the scholarly documentation of heritage are interconnected processes. A digital catalog, a master–apprentice program and descriptions indicating the origin of products are proposed for cooperation between women artisans and women art historians.
