Effective Strategies for Expanding Academic Vocabulary Among Advanced EFL/ESL Learners
Main Article Content
Abstract
The mastery of academic vocabulary is crucial for advanced EFL/ESL students since they require being able to comprehend academic materials, take part in discussions and communicate in written form. But learning individual lexical units does not guarantee that students will be able to communicate effectively in an academic way. In the present paper, intentional learning, exposure through context, practice, morphological analysis, collocations and production are considered. It is stated that advanced EFL/ESL learners require both depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge, and vocabulary needs to be acquired through meaning, grammatical behavior, collocation, register and usage.
