Abstract

The article examines the historical and cultural significance of the epic “Edige” for the study of the past of the Karakalpak people. It analyzes the historical basis of the epic, its connection with the events of the late 14th and early 15th centuries, its various versions and the particular features of their study. Special attention is given to the research of V.M. Zhirmunsky and Karakalpak scholars. The relationship between historical reality and folkloric interpretation is revealed. The significance of the epic “Edige” as an important source for studying the historical memory and cultural heritage of the Karakalpak people is emphasized.
