Abstract

The morphology and elemental composition of the components of a low-clinker composite cement, namely cement clinker, kaolin, calcined kaolin and an iron-bearing technogenic material, were compared. The kaolin was thermally treated at 800 °C for 60 minutes, ground and passed through a 0.08 mm sieve. SEM and EDS analyses revealed differences in particle morphology, surface structure and elemental composition: Si and Al predominate in kaolin and calcined kaolin, Ca and Si in clinker, and Fe, Si, Ca, Mg and Al in the iron-bearing material. Thermal treatment altered the morphology of the kaolin. The results provide a structural and chemical basis for further hydration and microstructural studies.
