New data on the Gurlen Karakalpaks
Main Article Content
Abstract
Today, Karakalpaks also live in the Gurlen district of the neighboring Khorezm region. Meetings were held with Karakalpaks in the locality called Dosymbiy. In the Dekkhanabad and Bozkala mahallas, about thirty-five Karakalpak households in all live alongside people of Uzbek, Kazakh and Korean nationality. The Khorezm Karakalpaks still live by farming and animal husbandry where they were born and raised, close to their ancestral homeland. Since language is a rapidly changing phenomenon, differences can also be noticed in the phonetics, lexicon and morphology of the Gurlen Karakalpaks’ language. About a century has passed since they settled here, and as they were educated in Uzbek, distinctive features in their speech are natural. Similar ethnographic groups also occur in areas of the Republic of Turkmenistan bordering Karakalpakstan. We consider it necessary to study the history, language, literature and culture of these groups and to incorporate this knowledge into Karakalpak scholarship.
