Lexical-semantic characteristics of the category of emotivity in English and Karakalpak literary works
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article offers a scholarly analysis of how synonyms and antonyms, as lexical-semantic means of expressing the category of emotivity, are used in the text of literary works. The theoretical framework draws on V.I. Shakhovsky’s types of emotive semantics and their connotative potential in the literary text. The study employs holistic text analysis, contextual analysis, functional-stylistic analysis and the emotive valence method. The analysis shows that synonyms serve to heighten the intensity of an emotional state and of expressions of anger or indignation, whereas antonyms (including negative-prefix and lexical antonyms) play an important role in revealing the character’s inner psychological tension, antithetical opposition and ambivalent (mixed) emotional states.
