Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of the engineering-geological conditions along the route of the Kegeyli Canal in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, which showed that the canal route is underlain by alluvial silty sands, sandy loams and loams. A method for calculating seepage losses of irrigation water that takes the engineering-geological conditions into account is described using the Kegeyli Canal as an example. The calculations were performed with N.N. Pavlovsky’s formula. The results showed that water losses along the 55 km long canal are uneven. According to the calculations, the maximum, mean and minimum seepage losses per linear kilometre along the entire length of the canal are Qfmax=3.01–4.9 m³/s; Qfmean=1.22–3.3 m³/s; Qfmin=0.07–0.8 m³/s, respectively. In the calculations, the permeability coefficient of clayey soils was determined from an experimental correlation between the plasticity index and the permeability coefficient. A graph describing seepage water losses along the entire length of the Kegeyli Canal was constructed, and it showed that seepage losses along the canal route are uneven. To reduce non-productive water losses in the canal, an anti-seepage lining should be designed. Anti-seepage measures should be implemented with due regard for the seepage properties of the soils.
