Assessment of water consumption and water use efficiency in drip-irrigated common bean: principles of application in the Aral Sea region
Main Article Content
Abstract
Based on field experiments conducted in Tashkent region of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the article assesses the effect of drip irrigation technology for common bean on water consumption, soil moisture and water use efficiency. According to long-term data obtained within dissertation research, under drip irrigation the total crop water consumption over the growing season and the irrigation rates differ fundamentally from those of conventional methods. In the field experiments, the drip-irrigated treatment received 22 irrigations during the season, and the seasonal irrigation rate was 3240 m³/ha. This consistently saved up to 31% of water resources compared with conventional furrow irrigation (4700 m³/ha). Under drip irrigation, grain yield averaged 30 c/ha (3.0 t/ha), which was 33.3% higher than the yield of the furrow-irrigated control (22.5 c/ha). The results of the study and the developed methodological sequence provide a basis for designing a water-saving irrigation regime under water scarcity and soil salinization in the Aral Sea region, as well as for introducing and zoning climate-resilient innovative irrigation equipment and technologies.
