Scientific rationale for integrated management of the Zarafshan River water resources and water-saving irrigation technologies
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article analyses topical issues of the efficient and environmentally sustainable use of the water resources of the Zarafshan River. The study focuses on the need to consider, within a single system of water resources management, not only the quantity of water but also its quality indicators, the degree of mineralization, collector-drainage and return water, agricultural water demand and water-saving irrigation technologies. Existing studies indicate deteriorating water quality and increasing mineralization in the lower reaches of the Zarafshan River, as well as changes in the volume and salt load of collector-drainage water. On this basis, improving the mechanism of integrated water resources management is substantiated as an important way of reducing the negative consequences associated with water scarcity, deteriorating water quality and declining irrigation efficiency. The article proposes a concept for assessing water quantity, water quality, return water, irrigation technology and water productivity within a single management system.
