Abstract

The article considers the scientific and practical foundations of wastewater reuse for irrigation in Karakalpakstan. Under water scarcity in the Aral Sea region, soil salinization and high mineralization of collector-drainage water, treated wastewater can become an additional source of irrigation water. The aim of the study is to systematize a method for assessing the suitability of wastewater for irrigation according to international criteria and to develop recommendations for reducing salinization and sanitary-hygienic risks. The work used literature analysis, laboratory analysis of water quality (pH, EC, TDS, BOD5, COD, Na, Ca, Mg), calculation of the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and comparative assessment methods. As a result, criteria for the suitability of water for irrigation based on mineralization, sodium proportion and microbiological indicators are proposed, together with an algorithm for selecting the treatment method, irrigation technology and crop type. The conclusions can be applied to the sustainable use of water resources and the reduction of soil salinization in the Aral Sea region.
