Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the macro- and microscopic anatomical structure of the leaves and wood of the Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila L.), widely distributed across arid and severely continental regions of Eurasia, and evaluates their influence on physical and mechanical properties. The study highlights the xeromorphic features of leaf structure—such as a thick cuticle, hypostomatic stomatal distribution, and well-developed dorsiventral mesophyll—which contribute to its high adaptation to drought and thermal stress. The ring-porous structure of the wood, density of libriform fibers, and their interwoven pattern responsible for high resistance to splitting and enhanced mechanical toughness were examined. The average wood density at a standard 12% moisture content was determined to be 620-680 kg/m3. Despite its high strength, shock resistance, and flexibility when steamed, the material exhibits a tendency to warp during drying due to internal stresses.
