Rising water salinity in the residual water bodies of the Aral Sea and the sustainability of the Artemia raw material base
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article analyzes the dynamics of salinization of the Western Basin of the Aral Sea in 1998-2021 and its impact on the Artemia resource. Based on published studies and regional monitoring data, the average annual rate of salinization was found to be 4.87 g/l. The range of 100-165 g/l, considered favorable for Artemia, began around 2006 and ended in 2019, so the favorable ecological window lasted thirteen years. If the current rate persists, salinity will reach 199 g/l in 2026 and, by 2036, will approach 250 g/l, the level regarded as the survival limit of the species. Over the same period, the commercial harvest rose from 30 tonnes in 2010 to 2000 tonnes in 2020, and the share of Artemia in the exports of Muynak district reached 96.5%. Thus, a regional economy dependent on a single product has formed around a resource created by salinization, while the ecological basis of this resource continues to shrink.
