Medicinal properties of Alexandrian senna (Cassia acutifolia L.)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Alexandrian senna (Cassia acutifolia L.) is a medicinal plant of the Fabaceae family, also recorded in modern literature as Senna alexandrina Mill. Its leaves and fruits are an important raw material for the pharmaceutical industry owing to their high content of biologically active substances, in particular hydroxyanthracene derivatives and sennosides. Sennosides A and B are the main active compounds of senna preparations, and their stimulating effect on intestinal peristalsis and their laxative action have been widely studied.
