Abstract

The article analyzes the growth and development of 5–6-year-old saplings of southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides Walt.) and Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum (L.) Schott) grown in the hot, dry conditions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan on saline soils.

The aim of the study is to assess the adaptation of the two tree species to regional conditions and to determine the possibilities of their use in landscaping. During the study, tree height, trunk diameter, crown width, annual shoot growth, leaf size, phenological phases and survival rate were examined, and the external condition of the trees was assessed on a five-point scale. The data obtained are processed using methods of variation statistics. Literature data and regional studies show that the species differ in growth rate, moisture requirements and response to salinity: catalpa grows fast but requires regular irrigation, whereas Japanese pagoda tree grows more slowly and may need careful maintenance on the saline soils of the region. The article also covers crown formation and the ornamental value of the trees, their winter hardiness, their response to pests and diseases, and agrotechnical recommendations.

The results provide a basis for using these species in the landscaping of settlements under proper agricultural practices.
