Abstract

This research project systematically outlines the prospects of collecting sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) landrace germplasm derived from folk selection, which has undergone years of natural selection and mass cultivation across 3 distinct districts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan with diverse soil and climatic conditions, thereby developing resilience to local pathogens and extreme abiotic stress factors, and breeding mutant varieties based on this source. Selected seed samples from each district’s ecotype, comprising 30,000 seeds per district, were modified using a 1% high concentration of the alkylating agent ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). The stages of establishing the M₁ generation and performing targeted pedigree selection through M₂ to M₅ lineages are scientifically substantiated to recommend a novel mutant variety possessing high agronomically valuable traits to the State Registry.
