Identification of valuable breeding sources for fruit traits in the melon gene pool of Karakalpakstan
Main Article Content
Abstract
The local melon gene pool of Karakalpakstan is highly diverse in fruit morphology and quality indicators, which makes its use in developing new breeding material important. In the study, melon gene pool accessions were comparatively evaluated for fruit weight, flesh thickness and sugar content. Qari qiz katta (fruit weight 8.9 kg), Xorazm gulobi (7.8 kg) and Olmurt gulobi (7.1 kg) stood out for large fruit size. Flesh thickness was 7.8 cm in Ola gurbak, 7.5 cm in Qormiz and Xorazm gulobi, and 7.4 cm in Qari qiz katta. Sugar content was 15.2% in Navvot beshak, 15.1% in Oqqosh beshak, 14.4% in Qora gulobi and 14.2% in Qari qiz. The genotypes Xorazm gulobi and Qari qiz katta were found to combine large fruit size with thick flesh. The selected genotypes were assessed as promising initial sources of the corresponding traits for melon breeding.
