Importance of Artemia cyst storage and processing technology under a shrinking raw material base (the case of Muynak district)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article considers the technology of storing and processing Artemia cysts as a means of adapting to the shrinking resource base in the Aral Sea region. Climatic data for Muynak district reveal a technological limitation of the traditional open-air drying method: in March the daily temperature amplitude reaches 46 °C, so the product goes through repeated hydration–dehydration cycles, which, as reported in the literature, lowers the hatching rate. The transition to controlled drying and low-temperature storage raised the hatching rate from 70% to 85–87%; during storage the indicator increased from 75% to 86% and stabilized on days 20–28. According to customs data, within a single commodity line the average export price ranges from 10.21 to 38.87 dollars, i.e. it differs by a factor of 3.81. Calculations show that even if the export volume falls by 50%, the price required to maintain revenue is 22.36 dollars/kg – below the level already being paid in five export destinations.
