Growing Oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis L.) seedlings under heat and drought stress in the Aral Sea region: efficiency of propagation methods and substrates
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article covers the agrotechnical aspects of growing Oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis L.) seedlings in the hot and dry climate of the Aral Sea region. The study was carried out in 2025–2026 in the south of Karakalpakstan, in the nursery of the Kipchak State Forestry in Amudarya district. Seed sowing, transplanting of ready-grown one-year-old seedlings and propagation by green cuttings were compared on four substrates (peat, humus, sandy loam soil, and light soil enriched with organic fertilizer) in four replications. In July–August 2026, the mean air temperature by ten-day periods was 34.9–40.1 °C. In the first year, substrate type had no significant effect on seedling height (p > 0.05); from July to September, height increased by 1.75–2.07 cm in seed-grown seedlings and by 1.77–1.95 cm in ready-grown seedlings. Between 15 and 20% of the ready-grown seedlings died from the heat. In the second year, the highest value for ready-grown seedlings was recorded on peat (24.20 cm in September), whereas seed-grown seedlings showed no significant differences between substrates. Root formation in cuttings taken in July was very weak. The results indicate the need for an agrotechnology that includes shading, moderate irrigation and biostimulants when growing seedlings in a hot climate.
