Methods of maintaining milk productivity of lactating cows in a hot climate (summer stress)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of the study is to identify and summarize scientifically based methods for maintaining the milk productivity of dairy cows under summer stress in a hot climate. The research methods included a systematic analysis of literature published in international scientific journals in 1994–2015, classification of stress zones by the temperature-humidity index (THI), and a comparative assessment of the effectiveness of technical, feeding and genetic measures. The analysis shows that when THI exceeds 72, feed intake decreases by 10–15% and milk yield falls by up to 10–25%. Shade, sprinkler and fan systems are the most effective means of cooling livestock, making it possible to recover 50–70% of milk losses. Adding protected fat to the diet, feeding during the cooler hours of the day and keeping drinking water at 10–15°C help to maintain milk productivity. The economic damage caused by heat stress can be significantly reduced only when a set of measures is applied in combination.
