Abstract

This article studies the quality indicators of late-ripening watermelon varieties grown in the agroclimatic conditions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the possibilities of their long-term storage and the changes that occur during storage. The studies compared the agrobiological characteristics, yield, flesh yield and keeping quality of the Qozibay, Xait qara and Gulistan varieties.

The observations were carried out on watermelon-growing farms in Nukus and Chimbay districts and in adapted storage facilities. According to the data obtained, the yield was 41.5 t/ha for Qozibay, 40.2 t/ha for Xait qara and 36.3 t/ha for Gulistan. The storage results showed that by the end of May, 41.7% of the crop in Nukus district and 37.6% in Chimbay district remained fit for consumption.

The results confirm that the correct choice of watermelon varieties, proper preparation of the fruit for storage and better storage conditions are important for reducing crop losses.
