Abstract

The article examines the possibilities of seed and vegetative propagation of common valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.). The study compares the effects of sowing date, sowing depth and temperature on seedling emergence. Under field conditions, the emergence of seeds sown in March–May was 25–30%, whereas for seeds sown in July–August it reached 56.6%.

In terms of sowing depth, emergence was 46.6% at 0.2 cm, 28.8% when seeds were sown on the soil surface and 29.4% at a depth of 0.5 cm. Seeds sown in a shaded place showed 56–60% emergence, while in a sunny place the emergence rate was reported to be low.

In vegetative propagation, young plants separated from the rhizome and planted in autumn and spring showed 95–100% emergence and 85–90% survival. The data obtained show the importance of choosing the planting date, depth and site when propagating valerian under introduction conditions.
