Abstract

This paper analyzes the medicinal and agroecological importance of Tagetes patula L. on the basis of the scientific literature. The presence of flavonoids, carotenoids, thiophene derivatives, terpenoids and essential oils in the plant has been reported. These compounds play an important role in shaping the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and nematicidal biological activity of the plant. The role of T. patula in agriculture is determined by its potential to suppress soil nematodes, its biological effect on certain phytopathogenic organisms, its allelopathic properties and its ability to attract beneficial entomofauna.
