Production of polyunsaturated fatty acids by endophytic microorganisms of Portulaca oleracea via fermentation-based biosynthesis
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this study, the biological safety and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) synthesis potential of endophytic microorganisms isolated from the tissues of the medicinal plant Portulaca oleracea, collected from the agroecological zones of Qibray and Yangiyo‘l districts of Tashkent region, were investigated. Out of 31 isolated endophytic strains, 4 highly productive and non-pathogenic leading strains (BPRC32, RSMAB-1, MD, and PP6C1) were selected through rigorous screening and selection. Gas chromatography (GC-FID) and molecular-genetic identification results revealed that Bacillus subtilis RSMAB-1 (NCBI: MW368768) strain exhibited high efficiency in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 3.20 mg/100 mg) production, while Saccharomyces cerevisiae MD (DDBJ: LC528142) strain excelled in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 0.25 mg/100 mg) and total PUFA (10.93 mg/100 mg) production. These indigenous strains serve as an ecologically and economically sustainable bio-platform for obtaining import-substituting Omega-3 and Omega-6 biologically active supplements in industrial biotechnology.
