Abstract

Based on a systematic review of scientific literature and genomic/metabolomic data, this study investigated the antibacterial and antifungal metabolites synthesized by the probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and their underlying modes of action. It is demonstrated that L. plantarum utilizes its pln operon clusters to produce class II plantaricins (PlnE/F, PlnJ/K), as well as cyclic dipeptides belonging to the diketopiperazine group [Cyclo(L-Phe–L-Pro)], 3-phenyllactic acid (PLA), and phenolic compounds. These metabolites are capable of disrupting pathogenic bacterial membranes, inhibiting biofilm-forming enzymes of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and suppressing the growth of filamentous fungi (Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium). The findings confirm the strong potential of using these metabolites as biopreservatives in the food industry and as biological agents against multidrug-resistant strains in medicine.
