E. coli in poultry products: antibiotic resistance and MDR
Main Article Content
Abstract
The antibiotic susceptibility of bacterial isolates obtained from chicken meat and shawarma samples sold in local markets was evaluated. The susceptibility of the isolates to streptomycin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, and ampicillin was determined using the disk diffusion method. A total of 34 bacterial isolates were recovered from chicken meat samples and 14 isolates from shawarma samples. Among them, 8 isolates showed signs of multidrug resistance (MDR). Species-level identification of the resistant isolates by MALDI-TOF confirmed their affiliation with Escherichia coli. The obtained results indicate the presence of antibiotic-resistant, including MDR, E. coli strains in the investigated food products and highlight the need for regular microbiological monitoring of their safety.
