Assessment of the viability of spore-forming bacteria immobilized on new-generation aluminium oxide sorbents
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study investigated the efficiency of new-generation aluminium oxide sorbents (AlMg6, D16 and ZnAl(O,Si)) of different porosity and chemical composition, obtained by micro-arc oxidation (MAO), in binding (immobilizing) microorganisms and maintaining their viability. Spore-forming Bacillus subtilis bacteria were selected as the model microorganism. Sorption capacity was assessed by counting the cells remaining free after contact, and post-desorption viability by colony-forming unit (CFU) counts on nutrient agar. The results showed that aluminium oxide sorbents have a high sorption capacity (75% for AlMg6) and retain bacterial viability at 88–93% after desorption, compared with 82% in the control.
