Isolation and identification of local bacterial strains (Pseudomonas spp., Bacillus spp.) that accelerate polyethylene degradation
Main Article Content
Abstract
The isolation and identification of Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus spp. bacterial strains capable of efficiently degrading polyethylene from local waste landfill soils, aiming to mitigate the adverse environmental impact of plastic waste. Selection was carried out using a Mineral Salt Medium where polyethylene films served as the sole carbon source. During 60-day laboratory experiments, Pseudomonas putida and Bacillus subtilis strains demonstrated high destructive activity, reducing the weight of the polyethylene film by 16.4% and 14.8%, respectively. FTIR spectroscopy and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analyses scientifically confirmed oxidation and structural degradation processes on the polymer surface.
