ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPTS OF MULTIPLE REPETITION AND NARRATIVE COMPLEXITY IN ARTISTIC WORKS (ON THE EXAMPLE OF MARIO VARGAS LLOSA'S WORKS THE HEROIC TIME AND THE FEAST OF THE GOAT)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyzes Mario Vargas Llosa's novels The City and the Dogs (1963) and The Goat's Feast (2000) in depth from the perspective of the concepts of polyphony and narrative complexity. Polyphony, based on Mikhail Bakhtin's theory, provides a multi-voiced literary text by presenting events through multiple characters and perspectives, which in turn reveals the structures of totalitarianism and power in society. Narrative complexity, on the other hand, requires the active participation of the reader through the experience of time, space, and storytelling techniques, while also connecting political and personal traumas. The article examines the multiple perspectives (omnipresent, first-person monologues) used in The Time of the Hero to portray the internal conflicts of young people in a military school environment and the corruption of society, as well as the complexity of personal and historical events during the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic in The Feast of the Goat through a non-linear structure and multiple perspectives (Urania, Trujillo, the voices of the assassins). Through a comparative analysis of the two works, Vargas Llosa's artistic style demonstrates the transition between postmodernism and modernism in Latin American literature, emphasizing the impact of power on personal life. The analysis is conducted taking into account Vargas Llosa's influence on Faulkner and Flaubert, as well as his political evolution (the transition from left to liberalism). The article emphasizes the role of multiple perspectives in literary criticism in the critique of totalitarian regimes and the dialogue of narrative complexity with the reader.
