NARRATICAL MODEL (GENNETT) AND COMPARATIVE POETICS IN THE STUDY OF THE SHORT STORY GENRE: COMPARATIVE METHODS

Abstract

This thesis examines the novella genre using Gérard Genette's narratological model and the mechanisms of mutual harmonization of comparative poetics. Genette's categories of time, point of view, and voice reveal the internal mechanics of short prose at the microtext level, while comparative poetics allows us to identify the movement of genre functions, motifs, and paratexts between national literatures. The study examines the similarities and differences between Uzbek short stories and European traditions through the order, duration, and frequency of time; focalization mode; narrator's voice, and emblematic motifs. The results show that in Uzbek short stories, time manipulation often prepares an ethically oriented climax, while internal monologue is often combined with a social tone in the form of dialogical self-referral, while emblematic details and symbolic returns work in functional analogy with the European "falcon" model. The comparative approach helped to analyze the agreement between paratext (genre labels, annotation) and reader expectations and showed ways to harmonize Genette's model with national poetic norms. In conclusion, the synthesis of both methods provides a more precise classification of the short story along the structure-effect axis and offers practical principles for translation, editing, and curriculum.
