Abstract

This study is devoted to the study of the process of formation of synonymic rows in modern English based on a historical-linguistic approach. The study systematically analyzes the multi-source nature of the English lexicon, that is, the synonymous layers that arose as a result of the interaction of Germanic, French and Latin languages. Synonymic rows are studied not only from the point of view of semantic proximity, but also from the point of view of etymological origin, stylistic level and communicative function.
