Abstract
This article analyzes the role and importance of foreign lexicon in the formation of the language vocabulary based on the materials of “The Century Dictionary”. It considers foreign words as a separate layer of the acquired lexicon, and highlights their diachronic and synchronic characteristics. The lack of clear theoretical criteria for distinguishing foreign words in the dictionary and the impact of this situation on the assessment of foreign lexicon are revealed.
