Abstract

This article provides a scientific analysis of the place of the still life genre in fine art and of the distinctive features of drawing it. The still life is examined as a genre based on depicting inanimate objects — fruits, flowers, dishes, books, and household items — in a particular compositional arrangement. The article elucidates the essence and significance of the genre and its connection with visual perception, spatial imagination, and colour psychology. It enumerates the skills of observation, spatial thinking, colour analysis, and understanding of the laws of light and shadow that an artist develops in the process of drawing a still life. The scientific and aesthetic foundations of composition — the factors of balance, rhythm, and repetition — are analysed separately.
